Vesely Wins at No. 6 Singles, but 'Dogs Fall to Winthrop, 6-1

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshman Adrienne Vesely won at No. 6 singles, but the Garnder-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Winthrop Eagles, 6-1, in Big South Conference action on Wednesday.

In doubles play, Winthrop clinched the point with wins in the No. 1 and 3 flights. The match at No. 2 went unfinished.

In the No. 1 position, the Eagles' Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor, who are ranked 46th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation, defeated Daniela Naupari and Miljana Ristic, 6-1. At No. 3, Milica Panic and Vesely were shutout by Winthrop's Ellie Burns and Tayla Van Eck.

Valentine Limauge and Manon Delsol's contest in the No. 2 position was halted after the Eagles clinched the doubles point.

In singles action, Ristic battled #43 Proctor for two sets in the top flight. After falling 6-0 in the first set, she battled to win two games in set two but ultimately fell, 6-2, as Winthrop extend its lead to 2-0.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead when reigining Big South Freshman of the Week Mayumi Saguchi lost in the No. 4 position, and quickly won at No. 5 and No. 2 as well.

At No. 4, Limauge dropped the first set to Kauffman and battled back to force a 4-4 tie in set two before Kauffman won the final two games to take the match.

Veseley, who is a former Freshman of the Week honoree having earned recognition in February, took set one from Winthrop's Alya Mourad, 6-4 before winning the match with an identical score in the second set.

Despite Vesley's win, the 'Dogs dropped the match, 6-1, and fall to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in Big South Conference play. The Eagles are now 10-5 and a perfect 6-0 in BSC action.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Hampton, Virginia for an 11 a.m. match with the Hampton Pirates.
