CLINTON, S.C. – After scoring four runs in the first inning, Gardner-Webb survived a comeback effort by Presbyterian, hanging on for a 5-4 win over the Blue Hose on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (10-9, 2-3 Big South) jumped out to a quick lead over Presbyterian (9-14, 3-2 Big South), plating four runs, all with two outs on the board.
Chandler Redmond put the first run on the board with a RBI single to center field, later followed by a RBI bunt single by
Chris Clary and a two-run double down the left field line by
Ben LaSpaluto.
Presbyterian scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan White, setting the score at 4-1.
Neither team produced much offense until the top of the seventh, when
Corey Howard connected with a RBI knock to right field to once again put the 'Dogs up by four runs at 5-1.
PC began its comeback effort tin the bottom half of the frame, scoring on a RBI single by Michael Varga, followed by a groundout by Andrew Livingston that allowed one more run to cross the plate, putting the score at 5-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Hose scored on a RBI single to left field by Graham Mitchell with one out and had runners on second and third with two outs, but reliever
Langdon Wilson would fan Luke Matthews to end the game, sealing the win for GWU.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tallied 11 base hits throughout the game, with Howard (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), LaSpaluto (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Clary (2-for-4, RBI) and
Justin Kunz (2-for-5) each having multi-hit outings.
Presbyterian had six base hits on the day.
Landon Mitchell (2-3) earned the win on the mound for GWU, working 6.1 innings, allowing four runs to score on five hits with four strikeouts. Starter
Aaron Stewart lasted two innings, allowing no runs or hits with a strikeout. Wilson recorded the final two outs, giving up one base hit with one strikeout to earn his first save of the season.
Jake Rice (1-2) took the loss for the Blue Hose, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings on the mound. Jackson Dean recorded two outs in the seventh, allowing one run on one hit, and Clark Dearman worked the final 2.1 innings, scattering five base hits with a pair of strikeouts.
