Cincinnati Tops Gardner-Webb, 22-9, Sunday In Lacrosse Action

CINCINNATI, OH – Cincinnati scored five unanswered goals to erase an early Gardner-Webb lead and went on to a 22-9 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb (5-5) went up 1-0 in less than 60 seconds, when Talen Francis scored an unassisted goal. The Bearcats used a quick 5-0 spurt to take control, however, before Gardner-Webb could answer with an Abby Hanscom tally.

Cincy scored five more goals in a row to go up 10-2 with 13:09 to play before the half, but Gardner-Webb uncorked three unanswered – getting two goals from Hanscom and one from Eilish Gately to pull within 10-5 with 10:40 left in the half.

The Bearcats regained momentum, however, closing the half on a 5-0 run to lead 15-5 at the break.

Goals from Jessica Vetter and Francis to lead off the second half got the lead back to 15-7, but the home side went on another 5-0 spurt to put the game away. Hanscom and Hailey Maranto added a pair of late goals for Gardner-Webb.

Cincinnati held a 40-21 shooting advantage in the game and corralled 34 ground balls. The Bearcats also took advantage of 21 Gardner-Webb turnovers.

Monica Borzillo led all scorers with six goals and three assists and Kyle Nause scored four goals. Alyssa Adams and Gianna Napoletano each scored three goals for Cincinnati.

Gardner-Webb got four goals from Hanscom, two from Francis and one each from Gately, Maranto and Vetter. Gately and Jada Preston each had an assist for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb will begin Big South Conference play on Saturday, March 30, traveling to Radford for a 1:00 pm game.
