SHELBY, N.C. – Gardner-Webb senior
Chandler Redmond belted his 39
th career home run, breaking the program's all-time home run record, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs would fall to visiting Furman by a 18-3 score in midweek action.
GWU (10-11) took an early 2-0 lead over Furman (7-16) in the bottom of the first inning as Redmond uncorked a 1-0 pitch well past the centerfield wall. It was his seventh home run of 2019 and the 39
th of his career, surpassing the previous record of 38 set during the 2000 season by Sammy Pruett.
Furman answered in the top of the second inning, seizing control of the matchup by plating six runs.
Each team added a run in the fifth inning, with Redmond driving in another run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame, setting the score at 7-3.
The Paladins would expand their lead throughout the remainder of the game, scoring multiple runs in each remaining inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had five base hits on the evening, with Redmond (1-3, HR, 3 RBI) driving in each of the team's runs.
Furman totaled 23 base hits for the game, paced by Jabari Richards (4-for-4, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI) who batted for the cycle, and Dax Roper (4-for-5, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI).
Matt Lazzaro (1-3) earned the win on the mound for the Paladins, allowing one run on one base hit with four strikeouts in three innings of work. Starter Nik Verbeke lasted four innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits while fanning three batters. Mason Kenney worked the final two scoreless frames, allowing no hits with two strikeouts.
Aaron Stewart (1-1) took the loss for GWU, giving up five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Noah Davis allowed four runs on ten hits with a pair of strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief, and
Cody Dooley,
Chase Lane, and
Luke Williamson each worked one inning from the bullpen.
