DURHAM, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team won its third straight match with a 5-2 win over the North Carolina Central Eagles on Saturday afternoon thanks to five singles victories.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-6 overall) started doubles play with a win in the No. 3 position where
Adrienne Vesely and
Milica Panic defeated Sofia Miller and Emily Pena, 6-1. North Carolina Central would win at No. 2, 6-2, and the Eagles' Frida Cnossen and Hannah Gaines narrowly defeated
Miljana Ristic and
Mayumi Saguchi at No. 1, 7-5, to win the doubles point.
North Carolina Central (7-10 overall) took a 2-0 lead when Gardner-Webb lost at No. 6 by default. Although the 'Dogs began the match with a deficit, they still prevailed due to strong singles play in the remaining five flights.
At No. 4 singles, Vesely was first off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Miller, and Ristic tied the match at two-all with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 1 flight.
Valentine Limauge put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front for good with a two-set win in the No. 2 position. Limauge won each set, 6-4.
At No. 3, Saguchi, clinched the match for Gardner-Webb. After taking the first set from Hannah Gaines, 6-1, she was defeated in set two, but responded in a big way with a 6-4 win in set three to take the match.
The 'Dogs concluded the day with a victory at No. 5 where Panic was victorious in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Monday for a non-conference match with the Charlotte 49ers. First serve is set for 2 p.m. from Boiling Springs, N.C. The following day, Tuesday, April 2, the 'Dogs will host Limestone College at 3:30 p.m. before resuming Big South Conference play at Radford at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
