Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Runnin' Bulldogs Fall to Charlotte, 4-0, in Non-Conference Action on Monday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team had its three-match win streak snapped with a 4-0 loss to the Charlotte 49ers on Monday afternoon.

The match between the Runnin' Bulldogs and 49ers was supposed to be Gardner-Webb's season opener in January but was postponed multiple times due to weather.

Charlotte (14-7 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning doubles matches in the No. 3 flight (6-1) and No. 2 flight (6-2).

The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-7) fell in the first three singles matches as Charlotte clinched the victory, but the 'Dogs did not go down without a fight.

The 49ers won at No. 2 singles by default, and despite falling in the No. 3 and 4 positions, Valentine Limauge and Mayumi Saguchi both forced first-set tiebreakers.

Miljana Ristic's match in the top flight went unfinished, but was in the middle of its third set. Ristic won set one, 6-4 and fell in set two as Charlotte's Tai Martin forced a third set. The final set was tied when the match was called.

Freshman Adrienne Vesely, who leads all Runnin' Bulldogs with 10 wins this season, had match point at No. 5 but did not finish. Vesely won the first set but needed a tiebreaker to do so, and was up 5-4 in set two, serving for the win. Wiith a 40-15 lead and match point, the Plano, Texas native was unable to finish her match as the 49ers clinched the victory.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their second match in as many days when they host the Limestone College Saints, tomorrow, Tuesday, April 2, at 3:30 p.m.
