SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb lost in both ends of a doubleheader at Wofford on a cold, wet Saturday evening at Russell C. King Field.
Gardner-Webb (7-4) dropped the first game of the day to Wofford (9-6) by a 14-5 score before falling in the nightcap, 6-2.
GAME ONE
Wofford scored ten runs in the seventh and eighth innings to go on to hand Gardner-Webb a 14-5 loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The longest game of the 2019 season for the Runnin' Bulldogs, lasting 3:52, saw a total of nine pitchers used along with 13 total walks.
Wofford jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. After loading the bases on three straight walks to start the frame, the Terriers were able to plate one run on a dropped fly ball, followed by a RBI single by Josh Congdon to take a 2-0 lead.
Wofford expanded its advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the second as Hudson Byorick grounded into a RBI fielder's choice.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the third inning when
Justin Kunz connected with a RBI base hit to center field, scoring
Ben LaSpaluto, who reached earlier in the frame after being hit by a pitch to set the score at 3-1.
The Terriers pushed their lead back to three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Mike Brown, scoring Congdon who led off the inning with a single to right field.
GWU answered in the top of the sixth with one run to set the score at 4-2. Kunz led off the frame by belting the first pitch he saw off of the right field wall for a stand-up triple, and would score on a RBI groundout by
Corey Howard.
The 'Dogs trimmed their deficit to one run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single to left field by
Ben LaSpaluto.
Wofford seized control of the contest in the bottom of the seventh. John Dempsey led off with a solo home run, which was later followed by a two-run single by Brett Rodriguez. Two more runs would score on a sacrifice fly by Lawson Hill and an error by GWU third baseman
CJ White.
Gardner-Webb attempted a comeback effort in the top of the eighth, with Howard leading off the frame with an infield single, followed by a two-run home run off of the upper part of the scoreboard in right field by
Chandler Redmond, his fourth home run of the year.
The 'Dogs were unable to continue their rally, as Wofford reliever Jake Hershman retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The Terriers added five more runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the bout in their favor.
Gardner-Webb totaled nine base hits in the contest, paced by Kunz, who was 3-for-5 with a triple and one RBI. Redmond (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and
Ben Rowdon (2-for-4, 2 2B) also had multiple base hits.
Wofford collected 14 hits, led by Congdon (3-for-5, RBI) and Andrew Orzel (3-for-4, RBI).
Isaac Campbell (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing three runs on four base hits with three strikeouts in three innings.
Austin Higginbotham (3-1) earned the win for the Terriers, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in 6.2 innings. Rasesh Pandya and Hershman combined to toss the final 2.1 innings.
GAME TWO
Gardner-Webb scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but was unable to further attempt a comeback effort, falling by a 6-2 score to Wofford in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader.
The first five innings of the nightcap were a pitcher's duel, as both team's hurlers kept the opposing offenses at bay.
Landon Mitchell scattered three base hits while fanning six batters and issuing just one walk for the Runnin' Bulldogs and Wofford starter Hayes Heinecke allowed just three hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk.
The Terriers broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the sixth. Orzel led off the frame by drawing a walk, and with one out, Rodriguez belted a double to the right field gap to put two runners in scoring position.
That brought up Hill, who drove home Orzel from third on a base hit to score the first run of the nightcap. Two more runs scored later on a throwing error by LaSpaluto, and one more would cross home plate as Ethan Cornelius was caught stealing to give Wofford a 4-0 edge.
Wofford added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on a base hit by Dempsey, and one more run crossing the plate on an error by Redmond at second base.
Gardner-Webb attempted a comeback effort in the top of the ninth inning. Howard led off the frame on a base hit and stole second base to get in scoring position for Redmond, who drove him home on a stand-up double to the right field gap to give the 'Dogs their first run of the game.
Redmond would later score on a RBI groundout by
Mitch McLendon, but GWU would not be able to complete the rally, as
Chris Clary would strikeout in the following at bat to end the bout.
Heinecke (3-0) earned the win for the Terriers, scattering three base hits with 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless frames. Matt Ellmyer worked the last two innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four base hits with three strikeouts.
Mitchell (1-2) was saddled with the loss for GWU, giving up four runs, one earned, on five base hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
Luke Williamson tossed the final two innings for the 'Dogs, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with three strikeouts.
Wofford had seven base hits, led by Hill (3-for-4, RBI).
GWU had seven hits, paced by Rowdon (2-for-4).
Both teams will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 pm at Russell C. King Field.
