Gardner-Webb Readies for 2019 SoCon Wrestling Championship

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb wrestling team is set to take part in the 2019 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship on Sunday afternoon as the squad looks to earn berths to the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Gardner-Webb will have nine participants in the tournament, led by redshirt-senior Tyler Marinelli, who is the No. 1 seed at 165 pounds.
Marinelli, who was named to the All-SoCon team earlier this week, is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA's latest RPI, finished the regular season with a 16-2 record at 165 pounds, going 6-0 in SoCon bouts.
Anthony Perrine enters the Championship as the No. 3 seed at the 197-pound weight class, where he was 8-2 overall throughout the season, including a 3-1 record in SoCon action.
Kyle Homet is seeded fourth at 174 pounds, going 15-11 overall with four wins by fall. In SoCon matches, he was 3-3.
At 133 pounds, Brandon Bright earned the No. 4 seed. Throughout the season, Bright posted a 6-9 overall record and was 2-2 against league opponents.
Blake Mulkey is the No. 5 seed at 141 pounds after going 6-12 overall this year, including a 3-3 record against SoCon competitors.
Evan Schenk enters the tournament at the No. 5 seed at the 157-pound weight class, where he was 5-10 overall and 2-4 in league action.
At the 149-pound weight class, Chase McKinney is seeded sixth. This year, he posted an overall record of 1-5 and was 0-1 in SoCon bouts.
JT Trautman is the sixth seed at the 285-pound weight class, where he was 0-2 this past year in conference matchups.
At the 184-pound weight class, Christian Salter is seeded seventh. This season, he was 1-9 overall.
The 2019 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship, hosted by Appalachian State University, begins Sunday, March 10 at 10:00 am at the Holmes Convocation Center.
