CHARLESTON, SC – The second Big South Conference match of the 2019 season did not have a favorable outcome for the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs women's tennis team as they fell to the Charleston Southern Bucs, 6-1.
Charleston Southern won all three doubles matches and began the match with a 1-0 advantage.
Despite falling in doubles, Gardner-Webb's
Valentine Limauge and
Manon Delsol (No. 2 flight) and
Adrienne Vesely and
Mayumi Saguchi (No. 3 flight) both fell by 7-5 scores.
Charleston Southern won five of the six singles matches, but Limauge was victorious in the No. 3 flight for Gardner-Webb, while Saguchi battled for three sets in the No. 4 position.
Saguchi suffered her first loss of the season and has played three matches across the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Saguchi was defeated by Charleston Southern's Kimberly Koerner. Koerner won the first set, 6-3, before Saugchi forced a third set. In set three, Koerner won, 7-5.
Limauge, who was a two-time Big South Freshman of the Week award winner in 2018, is off to an impressive 4-2 start in singles play. She defeated CSU's Michelle Schmitz in two sets, 7-6, 6-3.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Big South Conference action. The Bucs improve to 5-5 and are 3-1 in conference play.
Gardner-Webb will play a non-conference match against College of Charleston, tomorrow, Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. Following the contest with the Cougars, the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Wofford (March 13) and Big South opponent Campbell (March 15). .
