CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Chandler Redmond and
Corey Howard each had a pair of two-run home runs, propelling Gardner-Webb to a 11-4 win at Charlotte on Tuesday evening.
Gardner-Webb (17-16) matched its season high with four home runs on 13 base hits, while Charlotte (14-21-1) was held to seven base hits, with just one home run.
The Runnin' Bulldogs wasted no time at the beginning of the bout, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Howard belted a two-run shot over the center field wall.
GWU expanded its lead in the top of third, scoring once on a RBI single by
Justin Kunz, followed by a two-run home run to center field by Redmond, giving the 'Dogs a 5-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb followed with another big inning in the fourth, with Redmond belting another two-run home run, his 12
th of the season, and a RBI single by
Eric Jones, giving the 'Dogs an 8-0 edge.
Charlotte got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating one run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Haney, scoring Tommy Bullock who led off the frame with a double.
The 49ers trimmed GWU's lead to four in the bottom of the sixth as Rafi Vazquez connected with a three-run home run to center field, setting the score at 8-4.
Gardner-Webb pushed its lead back to five at 9-4 in the top of the eighth when
Chris Clary stole home plate with two outs.
Howard put the 'Dogs on top by seven runs in the top of the ninth with his second two-run blast of the night, his third home run of the season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 13 base hits, paced by Redmond (3-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Howard (3-for-5, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI) leading that effort. Kunz (2-for-5, RBI) and Jones (2-for-4, RBI) also had multi-hit outings.
Charlotte had seven hits, with Vasquez (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) and Todd Elwood (2-for-4) pacing the team.
Noah Davis (2-0) earned the win on the mound for GWU, allowing four runs on six base hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Aaron Stewart hurled 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts, while
Jarrett Thompson worked a scoreless ninth, fanning one batter.
Mason Herbert (0-2) took the loss for the 49ers, giving up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Charlotte used a total of six pitchers on the evening.
Gardner-Webb steps back into Big South Conference play on Thursday evening, taking on Winthrop at 6:00 pm in Rock Hill, S.C.
