Women's Lacrosse Tops Presbyterian 20-12 On Record-Setting Day

BOILING SPRINGS – Abby Hanscom scored five goals and Jada Preston had four to lead Gardner-Webb to a 20-12 win over Presbyterian in the regular season finale at Spangler Stadium Wednesday.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-10, 1-5 Big South) jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead and led 9-4 at the break, before weathering a brief storm from the visiting Blue Hose (1-15, 0-5 Big South).

After Presbyterian cut the lead to 9-6, Gardner-Webb used a 6-1 spurt to regain control and cruised.

Hanscom scored three goals in the first half, establishing a new single-season record for goals in the program's fifth season. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native became the first Gardner-Webb scorer to net 40 goals in a season, and finished with 42.

Preston scored twice and had an assist in the first half, giving her a school-record 23 helpers on the season. She added two more goals in the second half to finish her rookie campaign with 28 – putting Gardner-Webb up 16-9 with 9:45 to play, and allowing the GWU coaching staff to clear the bench.

Hailey Maranto, Talen Francis and Jessica Vetter each scored twice for Gardner-Webb, with Maranto adding an assist. Ten different Runnin' Bulldogs scored at least one goal Wednesday in a balanced effort.

Catherine Fox added three assists in her final game in Spangler Stadium for Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin' Bulldogs held a 28-6 edge in draw controls, dominating possession for much of the day. GWU also uncorked 43 shots, owning a +18 edge in that category. Alyssa Brown (9) and Francis (7) each had strong days on the draw.

Monique Martin had four draw controls and two caused turnovers in her finale.

Presbyterian got four goals from Sarah Marshall, two from Natalie Barnett and two more from Kara DiClemente. Alyssa Cooke scored one and led the way with two assists for the Blue Hose.
