Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall at No. 18 Tennessee, 5-0, Tuesday Night

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb bats totaled the same amount of base hits as the 18th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to push any runs across the plate, falling by a 5-0 score Tuesday evening at Tennessee's Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
 
Gardner-Webb drops to 18-19 overall while Tennessee, ranked No. 18 in the country in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, improves to 31-11 on the year.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs produced the first three base hits of the evening, as Corey Howard led off the second with a single and connected with a double in the top of the fourth, and Mitch McLendon connected with a double in the top of the third with one out, but GWU was unable to produce any additional offense in those frames to plate any runs.
 
The Volunteers got their first base hits of the evening in the bottom of the fourth as Jay Charleston led off with a knock to left field, and with one out, Andre Lipcius would put Tennessee on the board with a two-run home run well past the left field wall.
 
Tennessee added two additional runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring the first run of the frame on a RBI knock to right field by Ricky Martinez, who later scored the second run of inning by stealing home plate.
 
Another run was scored by the Vols in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by Lipcius, setting the score at 5-0.
 
Tennessee had seven base hits, paced by Lipcius, who finished the night with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a home run and three RBI
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs had seven base hits on the evening, with Howard (2-for-4, 2B) and McLendon (2-for-2, 2B) each having multiple-hit outings.
 
Camden Sewell (4-0) earned the win for Tennessee, allowing no runs on three base hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.  The Volunteers used a total of eight arms on the evening to combine for the shutout.
 
Noah Davis (2-1) took the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing two runs on two base hits with a pair of strikeouts. Aaron Stewart worked two scoreless frames from the bullpen, giving up one base hit, while Kyle Ruehlman allowed two runs to score on two hits in 0.2 innings of work.  Langdon Wilson recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh, a strikeout, and Jarrett Thompson allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout in in one inning on the mound.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action Friday evening at 6:00 pm, hosting Radford in Big South Conference action at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.
