Gardner-Webb Drops Series Finale to Radford, 7-6, Sunday Afternoon

SHELBY, N.C. – A five-run fifth inning by visiting Radford was too much for Gardner-Webb to overcome, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Highlanders by a 7-6 score in last bout of this weekend's Big South Conference series on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb (19-21, 9-12 Big South) built an early 2-0 lead over Radford (23-21, 14-7 Big South) in the bottom of the first inning, scoring runs on RBI singles by Justin Kunz and Eric Jones.

The Highlanders were held off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth inning, scoring their first run of the day as a passed ball allowed Colby Higgerson to score.  Two walks after that loaded the bases, setting up a RBI base hit by Kyle Butler that saw two more runners cross home plate to give Radford the lead.

Two more runs would score in the frame, with Grant Matheny scoring on a wild pitch by GWU reliever Aaron Stewart and a RBI bunt by David Bryant, putting Radford up by a 5-2 margin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs began to battle back in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring once on a RBI double down the left field line off of the bat of JP McGuire.

GWU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Chandler Redmond blasted a two-run home run well over the scoreboard in right field.  It was Redmond's league-leading 15th home run of 2019 and 47th of his career.

Radford responded in the top of the eighth inning, reclaiming the lead on a RBI single to right field by Straton Podaras, and in the top of the ninth, Radford expanded its lead to two on a RBI double to deep right field by Adam Whitacre.

The 'Dogs attempted to rally once more in the bottom of the ninth, with Mitch McLendon leading off with a double off of the wall in right field.  With two outs, he would score on a wild pitch to bring GWU within one run at 7-6, but the game would end on the next pitch on a deep fly ball to center field by Kunz, just shy of being a game-tying home run.

Radford was led at the plate by Matt Roth, who was 2-for-4 with one run scored, as the Highlanders totaled eight base hits on the day.

Gardner-Webb totaled seven hits, with McLendon going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one run scored to lead that effort.

Cameron Fritz (5-1) was awarded the win on the mound for the Highlanders, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.  Starter Brandon Donovan lasted 4.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs on three hits with two strikeouts, and reliever Bruce Hudson went 1.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit.

Jarrett Thompson (1-3) took the loss for GWU, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout in two innings of work.  Noah Davis lasted four innings in the start, giving up three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.  Aaron Stewart allowed two runs to score on two hits while fanning two batters, and Kyle Ruehlman worked two scoreless frames with no base hits.

Gardner-Webb returns to action Tuesday evening, taking on Wake Forest at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C. as part of the annual Jim Horn Memorial Game.  The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm with free admission.
