BOILING SPRINGS – No. 24 High Point used an 11-0 run in the first half to pull away early and went on to a 24-4 win over Gardner-Webb Wednesday in Big South women's lacrosse action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (5-7, 0-2 Big South) cut the Panthers' lead to 2-1 on
Lauren Deaver's goal with 27:00 left in the first half, but High Point (8-4, 2-0 Big South) scored 27 seconds later to begin its game-changing run.
Abby Hormes had two goals and two assists in the charge and the Panthers led 15-2 at the break.
Gardner-Webb got on the board first in the second half, with Deaver finding
Eilish Gately for a goal just 48 seconds into play, but High Point answered with four straight – two by Hormes – to get momentum going again in the second half.
Jada Preston scored Gardner-Webb's final tally of the day off an assist from
Abby Hanscom with 18:51 on the clock and High Point scored five more down the stretch for the final margin.
High Point controlled the action all day, out-shooting Gardner-Webb 36-12 on the day, with 21 shots in the first half. The Panthers were also an efficient 16-of-18 on clears and took full advantage of Gardner-Webb's 15 turnovers in the game.
Hormes led the way with five goals and three assists. Ashley Britton added four goals and one assist, and five other Panthers scored two goals apiece. High Point saw 12 different players score at least one goal on Wednesday in a balanced effort.
Gardner-Webb got single goals from Hanscom, Deaver, Gately and Preston, with Deaver, Hanscom and
Talen Francis each dishing off an assist.
Monique Martin led the defense with a caused turnover and three ground balls.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to play at Winthrop on Saturday. First draw is set for 1:00 pm in Rock Hill, S.C.
