Gardner-Webb Rallies To 9-8 Walkoff Win Over Campbell in 12 Innings Friday Night

SHELBY, N.C. – Corey Howard belted a RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to complete Gardner-Webb's comeback win over Big South Conference leader Campbell on Friday night.

Gardner-Webb (15-11, 6-4 Big South) trailed Campbell (18-11, 8-2 Big South) by seven runs as play headed to the bottom of the third inning, but the 'Dogs would tie the game after five innings.

Neither team would score until the top of the ninth when Luis Gimenez connected with a RBI single to left field, sending AJ Hrica across the plate to give Campbell an 8-7 lead.

The Runnin' Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game at 8-8 after a RBI single to right field by Ben Rowdon scored pinch runner Carey Spratlin.

The Camels loaded the bases in both the tenth and eleventh innings, but GWU was able to prevent any runs to score.

Play reached the bottom of the twelfth, which saw Justin Kunz lead off with a RBI double off of the center field wall.

After an intentional walk put Chandler Redmond on with no outs, Howard sent an 0-2 pitch into right field, allowing Kunz to score the game winning run.

Friday's game was Gardner-Webb's second walkoff win of the season, with the first taking place on Opening Day, a 3-2 win in ten innings on February 15.  It was also GWU's longest game of the season in both innings (12) and time (4:16).

Jarrett Thompson (1-1) earned the win for Gardner-Webb, keeping the Camels at bay for the final 3.2 innings, scattering three base hits with one strikeout.  Starter Isaac Campbell lasted six innings, surrendering seven runs on five hits with five strikeouts.  Langdon Wilson worked 2.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit while fanning four batters.

Phil Simpson (0-1) took the loss for Campbell, hurling the last 0.2 innings, allowing one run on a pair of base hits.  Starter Seth Johnson, one of the nation's top prospects, went four innings in the start, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits with five strikeouts.  The Camels used a total of six arms on the evening.

The Runnin' Bulldogs racked up 12 base hits on the evening, paced by Rowdon (3-for-6, 2B, 2 RBI) and Kunz (3-for-7, 2B).  Redmond drove in a team-high three runs on a three-run home run in the third inning, his tenth home run of 2019, while Eric Jones connected with his first home run of the season in the fourth.

The Camels had nine base hits, led by Michael Barefoot (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Collin Wolf (2-for-4, HR, RBI), and Hrica (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI).

The series resumes tomorrow at 3:00 pm at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.
