BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Millen Hurrion's two-set victory at No. 2 singles led Gardner-Webb past UNC Asheville, 4-3, on Tuesday and helped the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 5-1 in Big South play.
"The main thing for us to remember is that we still have two more matches, but it will take a team's absolute best to beat us," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "I love our team, but more importantly they love each other. This team has the best chemistry of any team that I have coached."
Gardner-Webb (10-7, 5-1 Big South) won the doubles point, thanks in large part to
Maximilian Scholl and Hurrion's victory in the top flight. The duo is now 13-1 at No. 1 doubles and 5-0 in Big South play. The pair cruised to a 6-1 victory, and at No. 3,
Sebastian Harris and
Jacob Wall clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Quinn Fender and Charlie Morkel.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got a win from Scholl at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, but the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville made it a 2-1 contest when Fender defeated
Stefano Puga at No. 6, 6-0, 6-2.
Ross Gilbert's 6-1, 6-3 win over Olly Cull at No. 4 singles put Gardner-Webb just one match away from clinching the match, but it would not before done before UNCA pulled within one match via a victory in the No. 3 position.
With the Runnin' Bulldogs in front, 3-2, and needing a win on the one of two courts still in play to secure the victory, Hurrion made quick work of Oli Nolan at No. 2 to ensure a Gardner-Webb win. The Weymouth, England native won in straight sets with identical 6-3 scores for his 13
th win of the season.
UNC Asheville (19-4, 6-2 Big South) won at No. 5 to make it a 4-3 final score in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
