BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb forward
DJ Laster will take part in an NBA workout Monday, June 10, with the Charlotte Hornets.
Laster (Pensacola, Fla. / Pensacola Catholic HS) wrapped up his Gardner-Webb career in style, earning Big South Conference Tournament MVP honors in leading the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament this past March.
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound standout scored 32 points in the title game win over Radford, dominating play from the opening tip until the final horn. He averaged 21.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in three league tournament games, shooting a sizzling 75.0 percent from the floor.
Laster was third on the team in scoring overall this past season, averaging 13.6 points per game. He ranked second with 5.7 rebounds per game and led the Big South with a solid 55.2 percent effort from the floor.
His efforts helped head coach
Tim Craft's squad post a 23-12 overall record, a 13-0 mark in Paul Porter Arena and the program's first conference tournament title since moving to NCAA Division I. Laster scored 25 points in Gardner-Webb's 10-point win over Georgia Tech in mid-December, and helped GWU knock off Wake Forest in late December.
During his four-year career, Laster scored 1,202 points, pulled down 501 rebounds and averaged 10.5 points per game in 114 games played. He started 62 games over his final two seasons, after spending his first two seasons as a reserve in the front court.
Gardner-Webb returns three starters from its NCAA Tournament roster for the 2019-2020 season, as well as the Big South's top recruiting class according to 247Sports.com.
