Kleppe, Jackson Score But 'Dogs Fall to Georgia Southern In Overtime, 4-3

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second time in as many contests, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker, this time falling to the Georgia Southern Eagles, 4-3, in overtime.

"When we score three goals we have to be able to win the game," said head coach Mike Varga. If a team comes out and earns four goals, then fair enough. Our girls worked hard. We made mistakes that led to other mistakes, which ultimately led to goals. We have to fix that, but we will regroup and get ready for ETSU on Sunday."

Paula Suarez Is made two saves in the first 20 minutes, and Gardner-Webb got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to Stina Kleppe's second goal of the season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-3-0) took the lead in the 26th minute when Maddie Turlington sent a ball to Kleppe who converted from inside the six to put the 'Dogs on top.

Georgia Southern (2-1-0) equalized just eight minutes later when Marcela Montoya scored her first of two goals in the contest. Montoya received a pass from Frida Brattum and punched one into the lower left portion of the net.

Over the final two minutes of the half, Gardner-Webb earned three consecutive corner kicks and scored off the third. After Kleppe sent the ball into the box, Aubrie Jackson gained control and scored her first goal of the year to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 2-1 at the half.

In the second half, Georgia Southern equalized for the second time when Dani Combs corner kick found Kristen Sandifer who then passed to Montoya. Montoya netted her second goal of the contest to in the 58th minute to tie things at two-all.

GSU's lead did not last long as Gardner-Webb was fouled in the box, and Kleppe converted a penalty kick to put the 'Dogs back on top, 3-2. The Runnin' Bulldogs' lead lasted three minutes as the Eagles' Brattum added a goal to her line in the box score.

Gardner-Webb had two shots on goal in the final 22 minutes of regulation, but both Kleppe and Jada Newton's shots were saved by Lauren Karinshak. Suarez Is stopped Karin Winka's attempt in the 78th minute, and the two teams played extra time.

In overtime, Kleppe and Jaasiel Forde both had shots stopped, but Georgia Southern's lone attempt of the first overtime period found the back of the net to give the Eagles the 4-3 victory.

Gardner-Webb outshout Georgia Southern, 18-12, but managed just seven shots on goal. 10-of-12 (83 percent) of the Eagles' shots were on target. Gardner-Webb took nearly double the number of corner kicks as their opponent, attempting 13 on the night, while GSU earned only seven. In goal, Suarez Is stopped six shots, and Karinshak made four saves for the Eagles.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to get in the win column on Sunday when they host the East Tennessee State University Bucs at 7 p.m. in Boiling Springs.
