Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gardner-Webb Earns First Win of 2019 With 1-0 Defeat Of Wofford on Sunday Evening

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Laurits Lillemose and the Gardner-Webb back line limited Wofford to three shots on goal, and Jorge Salgado scored the game-winner in the 87th minute as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated the Wofford Terriers, 1-0, on Sunday evening.

"Our back line did a nice job of limiting Wofford's attempts on goal," said head coach Tony Setzer. "Dylan Dominguez sent a nice ball to Jorge, and he was able to convert. It feels good to get our first win, and we need to continue taking steps in the right direction as a team."

Gardner-Webb (1-3-0) placed its first two shots on target, but both were saved by Wofford's Grant Wollam. In the 10th minute, Pedro Benito's shot was headed towards the upper left quadrant of the net before it was snagged by Wollam, and two minutes later Salgado fired a shot directly at Wollam, which was saved.

Wofford's (1-3-0) first shot came in the 28th minute but did not challenge goalkeeper Daniel Husa as it sailed high over the net. The Terriers' first shot on goal came following a corner kick, but was sent right at Husa who stooped low to snag the ball and give the 'Dogs possession.

Oskar Wang took Gardner-Webb's final attempt of the half, which sailed wide of the net as the two teams went to the break scoreless.

Wang also took GWU's first attempt of the second period, but it was off target in the 54th minute. Husa made his second save of the contest in the 57th minute, and after another Wofford attempt, this one an errant shot four minutes later, the pace slowed.

Wang took his fourth shot of the night in the 72nd minute, but from there, all of Gardner-Webb's attempts came from Salgado.

Salgado was off the mark in the 80th and 83rd minutes but scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes to play. With 3:12 on the clock, he received a pass from Dominguez and scored his second collegiate goal to put the 'Dogs on top, 1-0.

Wofford had two attempts to net the equalizer, but only one was on goal, and Husa made the save with 17 seconds remaining to preserve the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Each team took 11 shots on goal, and Gardner-Webb placed four on target, while Wofford had three shots on goal. For Gardner-Webb, Wang and Salgado each had four attempts. The Terriers had four different players record a pair of shots.

In goal, Husa stopped all three of Wofford's shots that were on target, and the Terriers' Wollam made three saves.

Gardner-Webb will return to action on Saturday, September 14 at Virginia Military Institute. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
