CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb wrestling team wrapped up competition at the 2020 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, with 11 wrestlers competing at the annual event.
In the opening round,
RJ Mosley and
Roderick Davis each earned decisions to advance to the round of 32 in their weight classes, as did
Jha'Quan Anderson, who was competing unattached.
Mosley earned a 6-3 decision over Rider's Joe Casey at 165 pounds and Davis defeated Dom Ducharme of Cal State Bakersfield, 9-2, at 197 pounds. Anderson picked up an 8-6 decision over Arizona State's Austin Clayton at 184 pounds.
Mosley dropped his next match to Stanford's Shane Griffith by a 9-1 major decision, but would bounce back with a 2-0 decision over Jon Hoover of VMI in the consolation rounds. His tournament would end on a 3-1 loss to NC State's Tyler Barnes.
Davis dropped a 10-1 major decision to Finger Lakes' Jacob Cardenas in the round of 32, but responded with a 4-3 decision over Paul Carson of Appalachian State in the consolation rounds. A 4-1 loss to VMI's Zach Brown ended his tournament.
Anderson was taken down by Pittsburgh's Nino Bonaccorsi in the round of 32 by a 22-7 tech fall, but answered by earning a 6-5 decision over Drexel's Owen Brooks in the consolation rounds. His tournament ended on a 3-0 loss to Noah Cressell of North Dakota State.
Also earning a pair of wins during the event was
Taylor Parks at 157 pounds. After a 16-3 major decision loss to Michael Vanbrill of Rutgers in the opening round, Parks responded with a 9-3 decision over teammate Evan Shenk and then pinned Rider's Quentin Milliken in 4:22 in the consolation rounds. His tournament ended with a 6-3 loss to Appalachian State's Matt Zovistoski.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Thursday, January 9, hosting Appalachian State to open Southern Conference action. The match is set for a 7:00 pm start time inside Paul Porter Arena.
