LYNCHBURG, Va. – Gardner-Webb men's tennis dropped its second match of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 7-0 at Liberty.
"Obviously winning is what we set out to do every time we play, but our overall effort today was way better than yesterday," Coach
Mike Griffith said following the conclusion of the match. "We made an improvement from Saturday and are getting better."
The Runnin' Bulldogs did not win any of the matchups in doubles competition. The first match to be completed was No. 2 doubles where Josh Wilson and Goncolo Ferreira swept
Connor Enslin and
Sebastian Harris, 6-0.
The next competition to be completed came from No. 3 doubles where Steve Mundt and Chase Burton defeated
Stefano Puga and
Alex Griffiths, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
The last doubles competition to be completed was close, with Nicaise Muamba and Deji Thomas-Smith defeated
Breno Plentz and
Ross Gilbert 7-6 (7-3) in the top spot.
The Flames were able to sweep the singles competitions as well. Ferreria defeated
Alex Griffiths 6-2, 6-2 in at No. 4 singles. Following that conclusion, the No. 2 singles matchup wrapped up with Wilson defeating
Ross Gilbert 6-2, 6-3. The Flames clinched the match when Burton defeated
Connor Enslin at No. 3 singles, winning 6-2 and 6-3.
Muamba defeated
Breno Plentz following the completion of the match-clinching point. The first and second sets were both won by identical 6-2 scores.
In the #5 and #6 positions, a third set was forced in both, with the Flames prevailing each time. In the #5 position, Marques de Silva came back to win over
Sebastian Harris 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Thomas-Smith defeated
Stefano Puga in the #6 position 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7).
Next week, the Runnin' Bulldogs have three more away matches. January 30th vs. Queens University of Charlotte, February 1st vs. South Carolina State, and February 2nd vs. Georgia Southern. The first home match will be on February 12th against Wofford.
