CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's men's tennis fell to Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday afternoon by a score of 4-3.
"We got outplayed and today they were better, I am disappointed, but the season is just starting," Head Coach
Mike Griffith said after the match. "I was glad to see our #3, #5 and #6 get their first win of the season."
Queens was able to win the point in doubles by winning the matchups in the #2s and #3s. The point was secured by Queens by winning in the doubles 2s when they defeated
Sebastian Harris and
Alex Griffiths.
The match game down to the singles matchups. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to win the #5 singles matchup behind
Sebastian Harris, 6-1 and 6-1.
Victor Putter was able to win the #3 singles matchup, 7-6 and 6-4, to jump out to an early 2-1 lead.
Queens tied up the match back up at 2-2 by winning in the #1 singles matchup over Gardner-Webb's
Breno Plentz, 7-5, 6-1.
Shortly following the conclusion of that match, Gardner-Webb's
Stefano Puga won over Queens' Roufsen in the #6 matchup, 6-3, 7-6.
Malmon from Queens tied the match at 3-3 with a win over
Alex Griffiths in the #4 position.
Alex Griffiths won the first set, 6-2, but lost 6-4 and 6-4 in the last two sets.
The match was clinched by Queens in the final point from the #2 position.
Ross Gilbert lost the matchup, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6.
Gardner-Webb falls to 0-3 on the season as it goes into a weekend with two more road matches. On Saturday, they play against South Carolina State at 1 p.m. On Sunday, they play at Georgia Southern with a start time of 11 a.m.
