BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2020 season in impressive fashion Sunday afternoon, sweeping visiting North Carolina Central at the Webb Tennis Courts.
Gardner-Webb improves to 1-1 on the young season, while North Carolina Central falls to 0-2 overall.
Action began with doubles play, where the pairing of
Mayumi Saguchi and
Teodora Ristic defeated Maru Berghaus and Ivana Dragovic, 6-0, at the No. 2 position, quickly followed by a 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot by
Milica Panic and
Daniela Naupari over Frida Cnossen and Hannah Gaines to seal the doubles point for GWU. The team of
Valentine Limauge and
Manon Delsol defeated Sofia Miller and Emily Pena, 6-4, at the No. 3 flight to sweep all doubles matches.
The Runnin' Bulldogs rolled through singles action, with Delsol making quick work of Polina Sakharova, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 position, and
Teodora Ristic earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gaines at the No. 3 position.
Saguchi's win over Miller, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 4 position clinched the overall match win for Gardner-Webb, while Naupari defeated Berghaus, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 position and at the No. 5 position, Limauge defeated Dragovic, 6-4, 6-3, to complete the sweep of the Eagles.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, February 1, hosting Western Carolina, with the first serve slated for 2:00 pm from the Webb Tennis Courts.
