BOILING SPRINGS – Elon scored 31 points off of turnovers Wednesday afternoon, pulling away for an 88-60 win over Gardner-Webb in both teams' season opener.
The game, played in Paul Porter Arena with no fans in attendance, saw the two teams combine for 40 turnovers and 48 fouls in a choppy debut.
The Phoenix (1-0) were able to get out on the break, shooting 47.5 percent from the floor – aided by 19 fast break points and 16 layups in the game.
Gardner-Webb (0-1) got 21 points and nine rebounds from freshman
Alasia Smith (Johnson City, Tenn. / Science Hill HS), with the rookie making 8-of-13 shots from the floor, 3-of-5 shots from long distance and a pair of free throws. She had four offensive rebounds, two assists and three steals before fouling out in 25 minutes of action.
Jhessyka Williams finished with 15 points in 29 minutes and
Lauren Bevis came off the bench to score nine points for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb shot 38.2 percent for the game (21-of-55).
Elon was led by Vanessa Taylor's 17 points off the bench. Saadia Munford and Kayle Liles also scored in double figures with 11 points apiece. The Phoenix also held a slight rebounding edge (41-36).
Gardner-Webb hits the road for its next six games, beginning at Auburn on December 1. Tip time is set for 7:00 pm on The Plains (SEC Network+).
