HAMPTON, Va. –
Lance Terry scored a career-high 26 points Wednesday afternoon, but Gardner-Webb couldn't find success from long distance as a team in an 80-69 loss at Hampton.
Gardner-Webb (1-5, 0-1 Big South) jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but saw the Pirates (4-4, 3-0 Big South go on an 11-0 run and seize control of the game.
After falling behind as many as 11 points in the opening stanza, Gardner-Webb rallied to trim the margin as close as 33-30 on
Jaheam Cornwall's driving bucket with 65 seconds left to play before intermission. Hampton's Davion Warren connected on a pair of jumpers in the closing moments for a 37-30 halftime score.
A quick, 5-0 spurt out of the locker room trimmed the lead to two, as Cornwall sank a three-pointer with 18:19 to play for a 37-35 score.
The Pirates responded with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes, getting big buckets from Warren and Chris Shelton. Hampton continued to build its lead and a three-pointer by Anthony Saheem with 6:55 to play gave the Pirates a 65-49 lead that appeared to put the game out of reach.
Gardner-Webb responded, going on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within 65-59 on a pair of
Jordan Sears free throws. Another Warren three-pointer built the lead back to double figures for Hampton, however, and the Runnin' Bulldogs would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 30.3 percent overall from the floor (20-of-66) and connected on 6-of-31 from long distance (19.4 percent). A 23-of-30 effort at the charity stripe kept Gardner-Webb in the game for most of the day and GWU held a 45-43 edge on the glass.
Terry made 7-of-11 shots en route to his career-high, which came on the heels of a 23-point effort at No. 21 Florida State. Terry also made all nine of his free throws.
No other Runnin' Bulldog scored in double figures, with Cornwall netting nine points on 3-of-15 shooting.

Hampton got 31 points from Warren on 11-of-20 shooting and 22 points from Shelton on 8-of-10 shooting. Anthony added 10 points off the bench and Duece Dean dished off 14 assists in the game.
The Pirates shot 45.2 percent as a team (28-of-62) and made 10-of-22 from deep (45.5 percent). Hampton also held the lead for nearly 33 minutes on Wednesday.
The two teams will close out the series on Thursday at Noon. The game will stream live on ESPN+.
