BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech outscored Gardner-Webb by a 27-4 margin in the third quarter to go on to take a 73-39 decision on Sunday afternoon inside Cassell Coliseum.
 
Gardner-Webb (0-4) caused Virginia Tech (5-0) to commit 24 turnovers on the day, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were cold from the floor, shooting at a 20.0 percent clip (15-of-75) and just 11.5 percent from long distance (3-of-26).  The Hokies converted 45.6 percent (26-of-57) of their attempts on the day, including eight made three-point baskets.
 
Virginia Tech used an early 13-2 run in the first quarter to build an early advantage, but the 'Dogs would battle throughout the opening half of play, pulling within five points at 24-19  with 5:48 left in the second quarter following a pair of made free throws by Jhessyka Williams.  The Hokies responded by closing the half with a 13-5 run to lead by a score of 37-23 at the half.

Emma Capps and Cierra Bell each had eight points to pace the GWU offense, both setting career highs.  Capps was 3-of-18 on the day, including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc.  She also had four rebounds, one block, and one steal.  Bell was 4-of-10 with four rebounds, four steals, and one assist.
 
 Alasia Smith led the Runnin' Bulldogs on the boards with 14 caroms, setting a new career high.
 
Virginia Tech was led in scoring by both Elizabeth Kitley and Aisha Sheppard with 17 points each.  Kitley also pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.  Asiah Jones and Georgia Amoore each followed with 15 points.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday, December 16, opening Big South Conference play at Presbyterian.  Action begins at 6:00 pm, with the second game of the league series taking place the following evening at 5:00 pm.  Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
