BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb's attempt to tie at the buzzer in overtime was blocked and Longwood escaped with an 84-81 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs Saturday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-13, 4-5 Big South) lost for the second-straight Saturday in overtime at home and have played four overtime games in Big South play so far this season (1-3). All five of the team's league losses have come by two possessions or less – or in overtime.
Jose Perez tied the game at 68 with a leaning three-pointer with 14.7 seconds to play in regulation and the last-place Lancers (8-15, 3-7 Big South) had a chance to win but
Eric Jamison, Jr., grabbed the missed shot at the horn.
Longwood went 6-of-7 (85.7%) in the extra period from the floor, however, rallying from down three early on.
Nate Johnson converted a four-point play after a five-second call on the Lancers with 20.3 seconds remaining in overtime to trim the lead to 83-81. A miss on the other end at the free throw line gave Gardner-Webb a golden chance, but Perez had a driving layup waved off and an offensive foul called with 7.8 seconds to play.
Jordan Cintron made the first of two free throws for a three-point lead, but
Ludovic Dufeal grabbed the miss and Perez had a chance to tie once again from deep. His desperation shot was tipped by JaShaun Smith just before the buzzer and Longwood escaped.
Gardner-Webb led by as many as 14 points early on, before Longwood went on an 18-2 run to turn the game on its ear. The Lancers led 38-35 at the break.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 27-of-54 (50.0 percent) from the floor Saturday, made 9-of-22 from deep and 18-of-22 at the stripe (81.8 percent), but 18 turnovers – and 19 Longwood points off of those mistakes – proved too much to overcome.
Dufeal scored a career-high 18 points, as he and Reid (10 points) combined to make 11-of-13 shots from the floor and block five shots.
Justin Jenkins supplied a career-high 13 points off the bench, Perez scored 13 and
Nate Johnson scored 11.
Longwood was on fire from long range, making 14-of-24 shots from the bonusphere (58.3 percent) and 30-of-58 overall from the floor (51.7 percent). The Lancers got 20 points from Smith, 17 from Juan Munoz and 11 from Shabooty Phillips to pace the win.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road for a pair of Big South games next week, beginning Thursday night at Presbyterian.
