BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Savannah Plentovich buried a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to give Gardner-Webb a 73-70 win over Longwood in Big South Conference action on Tuesday evening.
Gardner-Webb (13-10, 8-6 Big South) led Longwood (10-12, 6-7 Big South) by a 45-38 margin at halftime, but the Lancers would go on an 18-0 run in the third period, making 6-of-7 baskets during that stretch. GWU missed 11 straight attempts during their scoring drought, allowing Longwood to build a 56-47 lead with 1:12 on the clock.
The Runnin' Bulldogs closed the frame with a quick 5-0 spurt, capped by a corner-three by
Lauren Bevis to pull within four points at 56-52 as play headed to the final quarter.
Longwood pushed its lead to eight points with 6:18 to go in the fourth period, but GWU stopped the run on a layup by
Alexis Hueston, sparking an 11-0 run over the next 3:22 to put the 'Dogs back on top, 68-65.
The Lancers tied the game with 12.1 seconds left on a layup by Danya Rouse, leaving time on the clock for the Runnin' Bulldogs to drive down the court, setting up the go-ahead basket from long distance by
Savannah Plentovich with just 1.2 seconds left.
GWU had four scorers in double-digits on the evening, led by
Savannah Plentovich with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Lauren Bevis added 12 points, while
Carley Plentovich totaled 11 points and Hueston had 10 points.
Rouse led Longwood in scoring with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Kyla McMakin followed with 17 points on the evening.
Gardner-Webb made 26-of 64 (40.6 percent) of its attempts on the night, including 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from long distance. GWU was also 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
Longwood made 29-of-67 (43.3 percent) shots throughout the evening, and was 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lancers connected on 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) free-throw attempts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have now won four of their last five games and will hit the road for a three-game road trip, beginning Saturday afternoon at High Point. Tip-off -is scheduled for 4:00 pm with live coverage on ESPN+.
