HIGH POINT, N.C. –
Carley Plentovich scored a game-high 25 points as Gardner-Webb cruised to a 62-46 win at High Point in Big South Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (14-10, 9-6 Big South) jumped out to an early lead over High Point (11-13, 9-6 Big South), scoring 11 unanswered points midway through the opening frame to build a double-digit lead at 15-5 with 2:35 on the clock, and would lead by a 17-10 score at the end of the quarter.
GWU pushed its lead to 12 points at 27-15 in the second period after a three-point basket by
Carley Plentovich with 5:03 on the clock, but the Panthers would put together a 6-0 run to pull within six points with 1:28 remaining. The 'Dogs stopped the run on their following possession as Caponegro drilled a jumper to set the score at 31-23 with 1:08 to go, with that score holding until halftime.
High Point opened the third period with two quick buckets, trimming GWU's lead to four points, but the 'Dogs responded with a 5-0 run to and would eventually push the lead to 13 points at 44-31 after a
Savannah Plentovich basket from long distance with 3:02 on the clock. Both teams would trade buckets over the remainder of the period, with GWU taking a 47-35 lead into the final quarter.
The Runnin' Bulldogs controlled play in the fourth period, opening with a 11-2 run, capped by a layup by Caponegro to build a game-high 21 points with 2:05 left in the game. GWU would go on to win by a 16-point margin at 62-46.
Carley Plentovich led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-7 from long distance. The senior guard also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
High Point was led offensively by Camryn Brown with 13 points.
Gardner-Webb remains on the road for its next contest at Presbyterian. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm in Clinton, S.C. with live coverage on ESPN+.
