Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall to Appalachian State, 10-1, in Sunday’s Series Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Appalachian State capitalized on a four-run fourth inning, going on to hand Gardner-Webb its first loss of the 2020 season, 10-1, in the weekend series finale Sunday afternoon at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.

The Mountaineers (1-2) plated the first run of the day in the top of the second inning.  Andrew Greckel led off by drawing a four-pitch walk from Gardner-Webb (2-1) starter Noah Davis, and quickly stole second. Back-to-back groundouts by Hayden Cross and Alex Leshock allowed Greckel to cross home plate for the first run of the afternoon.

Appalachian State took control of the game in the fourth.  With the bases loaded and one out, Jack Lipson belted a two-run double and later Tyler Leek drove in a pair of runs on a base knock up the middle to set the score at 5-0.

The Runnin' Bulldogs scratched in the sixth, with Eric Jones connecting with a RBI single through the right side, driving in Cam Pearcey, who reached earlier in the frame on a knock the left field gap.

Appalachian State sealed the contest in the top of the eighth, scoring five runs on four hits.

Davis (0-1) took the loss on the mound for GWU, tossing 3.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts while giving up five runs on four hits.  Luke Williamson, Sean Casteel, Caleb Bissette, and Matt Rivers each saw time from the bullpen.
