BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's tennis opened Big South Conference play on a high note, sweeping all matches against visiting Hampton on Saturday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.
Gardner-Webb (3-3, 1-0 Big South) jumped out to a quick lead over Hampton (0-4, 0-1 Big South) with wins at No. 3 doubles by
Teodora Ristic and
Mayumi Saguchi over Franzene Tsui and Keri Quillin, 6-1, and at No. 1 doubles by
Miljana Ristic and
Daniela Naupari over Milena Amedieva and Laura Peralta, 6-0, to claim the doubles point. The match at the No. 2 spot went unfinished with
Valentine Limauge and
Manon Delsol holding a 5-0 lead over Viktoria Ljungman and Tori Alexander.
The momentum continued into singles action, with
Teodora Ristic defeating Viktoria Grigoreva, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Alexander by Limauge at the No. 5 flight to give GWU a 3-0 lead.
Delsol clinched the overall match win for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the No. 6 position, defeating Tsui by scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Saguchi defeated Peralta, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 3 flight, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot by Naupari over Ljungman.
Action wrapped up with a 6-0, 6-3 win by
Miljana Ristic, 6-0, 6-3, over Amedieva to give Gardner-Webb the clean sweep of Hampton.
The Runnin' Bulldogs remain at home for their next matchup, hosting UNC Greensboro on Thursday, February 27 at 2:00 pm at the Webb Tennis Complex.
