BOILING SPRINGS N.C. – Gardner-Webb won its 2020 conference opener over Hampton in a 7-0 decision on Saturday afternoon.
"Again, our doubles set the stage and after getting that point, we won six out of six first sets to put Hampton in a difficult situation," head coach
Mike Griffith said after the match. "However, being a conference match, Hampton kept the pressure up with a lot of heart, but we closed the door on them. Again, it was a great win today and I am looking forward to getting back to playing on Thursday."
The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to start the day by winning all the doubles matches. The first match that completed was the #2s where
Alex Griffiths and
Sebastian Harris won 6-1.
The next match to be completed was the #1 position where
Breno Plentz and
Ross Gilbert won 6-2, clinching the doubles point.
In the #3 doubles match,
Jacob Wall and
Stefano Puga won their match 6-4.
Gardner-Webb was able to win all the singles matches. The #1 position was won by Plentz 6-1, 6-3. Harris was also able to win both of his sets 6-2, 6-3 in the #5 position.
In the #6 position,
Connor Enslin was able to clinch the match victory with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. This was his first career collegiate victory in his fourth career match appearance.
The next match to conclude was Griffiths' match where he won in the #4 position 6-4, 6-2.
Shortly following the conclusion of that match, the #2s finished with Gilbert winning by scores of 7-5, 6-4.
The day concluded with the matchup in the #3 singles position where
Victor Putter was able to win in three sets with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6)
This match puts Gardner-Webb at 4-6 on the season as they won their fourth out of their past five matches.
Next up for the team is an away match at Limestone on Thursday with a start time scheduled for 2:30 pm.
