ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia Tech scored eight runs in the first inning as Gardner-Webb would fall to the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets, 14-1, Tuesday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium in downtown Atlanta, Ga.
After retiring Gardner-Webb (5-3) in order in the first, No. 17 Georgia Tech (7-1) immediately took control of the game, launching three home runs to drive in six runs before the first out was recorded in the bottom of the first. The Yellow Jackets would score twice more in the frame to build an 8-0 advantage.
Georgia Tech scored twice more in the third inning before Gardner-Webb scratched in the top of the fourth.
Eric Jones picked up the first base hit of the day for the Runnin' Bulldogs with one out, followed by a RBI knock by
Joe Brazil to set the score at 10-1.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on a pair of runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings to go on to take the 14-1 decision.
Jackson Finley (1-0) earned the win for Georgia Tech, working two scoreless frames, allowing one base hit with a pair of strikeouts. Starter Luke Bartnicki tossed three perfect inning, fanning six batters.
Luke Williamson (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing seven runs on four base hits without recording an out. GWU used a total of eight pitchers on the evening.
The Yellow Jackets collected ten base hits, paced by Michael Guldberg (3-for-4, 2B, RBI).
Gardner-Webb totaled four hits on the evening.
Gardner-Webb remains on the road, opening a three-game series at Jacksonville State on Friday evening. First pitch is slated for 6:00 pm with live coverage on ESPN+.
