NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Nate Johnson scored 21 points,
Eric Jamison, Jr., netted 20 points and
Christian Turner scored a career-high 17 points to lead Gardner-Webb to an 83-74 road win at Charleston Southern Thursday night.
The win clinched third place in the regular season standings for the Runnin' Bulldogs (14-15, 10-7 Big South). Head coach
Tim Craft's team has won six of its last seven games.
Kareem Reid continued his strong play, starting the game and producing 10 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots in the win. Gardner-Webb blocked seven shots overall, assisted on 18 of 32 baskets and committed only six turnovers in the win.
Turner's performance was sensational at point guard. The Atlanta, Ga., native made 5-of-7 shots from the floor, nailed all five of his free throw attempts and dished off seven assists with no turnovers in 32 minutes of crisp play running the offense.
Gardner-Webb shot 61.5 percent in the second half and 58.2 percent for the game.
Jaheam Cornwall added seven points, six assists and only one turnover in a solid performance as well.
The Runnin' Bulldogs seized the game following the under-four media timeout, going on an 8-0 run to create an ample cushion. GWU closed the game on a 12-3 run to seal the win.
Gardner-Webb led 38-37 at halftime, as the Buccaneers (13-16, 7-10 Big South) closed the gap on a three-point play by Phladrous Fleming, Jr., with 0.2 seconds remaining before intermission.
Johnson made five of Gardner-Webb's 10 three-point baskets, pulled down a game-high six rebounds and dished off three assists without coming off the floor. The Miami, Fla., junior has been Gardner-Webb's leading scorer since returning from a December injury – putting together All-Big South numbers over the last 17 games.
Jamison came off the bench Thursday, as Gardner-Webb went with twin towers Reid and
Ludovic Dufeal in the starting lineup. Jamison finished with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and played 35 minutes in another strong showing.
Big games from Fleming (23 points) and Ty Jones (23 points) weren't enough Thursday, as Gardner-Webb limited Charleston Southern to a 42.9 percent effort over the final 20 minutes after the Bucs shot 50 percent in the first half.
Nate Louis scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from long range and Travis Anderson came off the bench to score 11 points to supplement the two big scoring games. Charleston Southern shot 46.2 percent for the game (30-of-65) and lost despite an 11-of-29 effort from deep (37.9%).
Gardner-Webb will have a tall task ahead to close out the regular season, traveling to first-place Radford on Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 pm start.
