SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Jhessyka Williams scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to propel Gardner-Webb to a 70-59 victory at USC Upstate in Big South Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Gardner-Webb improves to 17-11 overall and 11-7 in Big South Conference action. USC Upstate falls to 8-19 overall and 3-15 in league play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got out to a hot start, opening the contest on a 11-1 run, capped by a Williams free throw with 6:52 on the clock. GWU led by double digits throughout the majority of the opening frame, finishing on a 5-2 run to hold a 21-9 lead after one quarter.
The Spartans batted back in the second period, holding GWU to just three made baskets in the quarter while going on a 20-7 run following a timeout with 7:39 on the clock to give USC Upstate a 31-30 lead at halftime.
Gardner-Webb reclaimed control of the contest in the third period with an 11-1 run midway through the quarter, capped by a pair of free throws by
Savannah Plentovich with 2:10 on the clock to put GWU back on top by double digits at 46-36. Both teams traded baskets over the remainder of the period, with Gardner-Webb taking a 50-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Spartans opened the fourth period with a quick 4-0 spurt to pull back within single digits at 51-44, but the 'Dogs broke the run on a three-point basket by
Ki'Ari Cain with 8:28 on the clock to go back up by 10 points and would lead by as many as 15 points with 1:41 to go after a pair of free throws by
Carley Plentovich. GWU would go on to take an 11-point win at 70-59.
Williams led a trio of Runnin' Bulldogs in double digits with 17 points on 7-of-22 shooting.
Lauren Bevis added 11 points and
Carley Plentovich provided 10 points. Williams also pulled down a team-high 10 boards.
Brianna Lewis paced the Spartans offense with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Riley Popplewell had 11 points and 14 rebounds on the day.
