BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb softball extended its win streak to 17 games Saturday night, taking down Lafayette 7-5 in eight innings.
The Leopards (0-5), searching for their first win of the 2020 season, jumped on top early and led Gardner-Webb 4-0 after three innings.
The Runnin' Bulldogs started their rally in the sixth.
Brooke Perry sprinted home on a passed ball to cut the lead to 4-1, then used a big swing in the seventh to tie the game. With
Ashlee Baker and
Trinity Sterrett on base in the seventh, Perry belted a three-run home run over the fence in center to tie the game.
Jenna Wacaster took her turn as game hero, smoking a solo bomb out of the park to give Gardner-Webb a 5-4 lead after seven innings.
Lafayette responded to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh, but
Weslyn Almond delivered another long ball, putting Gardner-Webb up 7-5 in the eighth with her two-run shot.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Sunday at the 2020 Duke Invitational Softball Tournament taking on Duke in doubleheader action at 2:00 pm and 4:30 PM. The game will be streamed live on ACCN.
