JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State scored six unanswered runs to go on to hand Gardner-Webb a 6-1 loss in Sunday's weekend series finale.
Gardner-Webb (8-7) claimed an early lead in the top of the first inning. A Cam Pearey walk, followed by back-to-back base knocks by
Mitch McLendon and
Carter Cunningham, set up a bases-loaded walk by
Keiji Parkhurst to give the 'Dogs the early advantage.
Arkansas State (7-8) answered in the bottom half of the inning. Liam Hicks led off by drawing a walk and would later score on a ground out by Sky-lar Culver to set the score at 1-1.
The Red Wolves claimed the lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Cullen Ray.
Arkansas State tacked on runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Noah Davis (0-3) took the loss for the 'Dogs, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.
Pearcey (1-for-3), McLendon (1-for-4), Cunningham (1-for-2),
Joe Brazil (1-for-4),
Ben Rowdon (1-for-4, 2B), and
JP McGuire (1-for-4) had Gardner-Webb's six base hits.
Chandler Coates (2-1) earned the win for Arkansas State, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Max Gehler (2.0 IP) and Kollin Stone (1.0 IP) combined to prevent any GWU base hits over the final three innings.
The Red Wolves collected 11 base hits, with Culver (2-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI) doing most of the damage.
Gardner-Webb remains on the road for its next contest, squaring off against North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm, with live coverage on ACC Network Extra from Boshamer Stadium.
