BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – No. 4 N.C. State scored bonus points in seven of 10 individual bouts Sunday afternoon to top Gardner-Webb 42-0 in both teams' season opener.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had a highly competitive result at 165 pounds, with
RJ Mosley battling Donald Cates before falling 5-3 on a takedown in the first tiebreaker. Neither man scored in the two 30-second overtime periods, but Cates was able to get the two-point takedown to end the match just 27 seconds into the tiebreak.
Freshman Ed Scott pinned Gardner-Webb's
Jacson Muldrew in the third period at 149 pounds, which followed a tech fall at 141 pounds for N.C. State's No. 10 ranked Tariq Wilson. No. 2 ranked Hayden Hidley, already a three-time All-America wrestler for the Wolfpack, needed only 52 seconds to record its second pin of the match at 157 pounds, pushing NC State's team lead to 25-0 midway through the dual.
After the Cates-Mosley battle at 165, N.C. State picked up major decisions at 174 and 197 – and decisions at 184 and 285 to close out the match.
Extra matches between the Runnin' Bulldogs and the Wolfpack took place throughout the day as well, in which Mosley defeted Kai Bele by a 6-2 decision at 165 pounds and
Evan Schenk earned a 7-5 overtime sudden victory over Dylan Reinert at 194 pounds
GWU also took on Campbell in a handful of extra matches to wrap up the afternoon. Mosley earned his second win of the day, defeating Bilal Bailey, 3-2, in the second overtime tiebreaker round.
Gabriel Pickett also earned a win at heavyweight, pinning Luke Davis in 34 seconds.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Saturday afternoon at Virginia.
