BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb put five men in double figures, led by
Jacob Falko's 17 points, to beat Campbell by an 85-70 score on Tuesday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
In addition to Falko's scoring, the Runnin' Bulldogs (3-6, 2-2 Big South) got 14 points each from freshmen
Jamaine Mann and
D'Maurian Williams, 13 points from
Jaheam Cornwall and 11 points (eight rebounds) from
Kareem Reid.
The 'Dogs held the lead throughout after Falko scored the game's first two points on free throws 34 seconds into the game. A 26-5 run that lasted nearly 11 minutes effectively put the game away, as Cornwall drove in for a layup with 5:18 before the break for a 34-12 lead.
That advantage grew to 43-19 on Reid's dunk off a feed from Mann with 1:07 to play in the half.
Gardner-Webb led 45-23 by halftime and worked that lead to a healthy 57-26 margin with an early 12-2 run in the second half's first six minutes.
Campbell (5-6, 1-3 Big South) found its shooting touch from there, going on a 7-0 run to slow Gardner-Webb down – then making 10 shots in a row over a 7:40 stretch to cut the lead all the way to 71-60 on a Messiah Thompson three-pointer at the 5:31 mark.
Williams answered with a corner three of his own to stem the tide, but Thompson sandwiched two more three-pointers around a tip-in by Reid to cut the lead to 76-66 with 3:09 to play. Reid connected on a jump hook in the lane for a 78-66 lead with 2:34 to play – and the Runnin' Bulldogs never let the margin get into single digits.
Gardner-Webb made seven free throws in the final 128 seconds and limited the Camels to a pair of layups for the final margin.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot well throughout, blistering the nets at 54.3 percent in the opening half (19-of-35) and making an even 50 percent in the second to finish at 52.6 percent for the game (30-of-57). That included a 7-of-18 effort from three (38.9 percent) and an 18-of-24 day at the free throw line (75.0 percent).
Gardner-Webb's work on the glass – a 37-25 edge – limited Campbell to just five offensive rebounds and eight second-chance points. The team's ability to get into the paint was effective early and the 'Dogs finished with a 46-24 edge in that area by the end of the day.
Campbell shot just 8-of-23 in the opening half (34.8 percent) but heated up to 55.6 percent in the second half (15-of-27) – aided by its 10-for-10 stretch midway through that final 20 minutes. The Camels shot 7-of-18 from deep, with Thompson connecting on 4-of-7 himself.
Thompson led all scorers with a career-high 18 points before fouling out late, Jesus Carralero finished with 13 points (10 rebounds) and Jordan Whitfield netted 11 points. Leading scorer Cedric Henderson had nine points for the Camels.
