BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took on Longwood University under the lights at Greene-Harbison Stadium on Saturday night. Taking the win in the tight matchup, the Lancers took a 3-2 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
"We showed a lot of grit to equalize late at 2-2," said head coach
Mike Varga. "We played well in moments but made a few mental errors that cost us. Longwood always plays hard and is tough to play against and keep coming at us. We weathered their attack pretty well in the second half but gave away a late goal that we couldn't get back."
The 'Dogs put one between the posts early on in the game, as
Livi Tanzer scored in the 8
th minute secure the lead early.
Battling back quickly, the Lancers scored two goals in the remainder of the first half to take the lead. Danielle Toone scored off of a pass from Alayna Palamar and Catharine Forst also managed to find the back of the net.
Scheming for a second half comeback, freshman
Klara Ovefelt scored the equalizer for GWU off of a touch from fellow freshman teammate Ximena Farias.
The Runnin' Bulldogs in the backfield were unable to hold up, as Longwoods Danielle Toone scored her second goal of the night in the 83rd minute to seal the win for the Lancers.
LWU led the night in shots with a total of 12, GWU took just two less. The 'Dogs led in corners with 4, as the Lancers had one less. The Runnin' Bulldogs paced the night in fouls with 12, with the Lancers having just 9 total.
The Red and Black will be back in action on Wednesday, October 6
th, as they travel down to the Palmetto state to take on Charleston Southern University. The match is slated to kickoff at 3 pm.
