BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb shot a season-high 58.1% (36-of-62) from the field, and six players finished in double figures as the Runnin' Bulldogs blew past Carver Bible College in Saturday's home opener from Paul Porter Arena, 100-38.
GWU's stout defense limited Carver to just 27.5% (14-of-51) shooting from the field and 21.7% (5-of-23) from 3-point range to help the 'Dogs improve to 1-3 overall on the season. The winless Cougars, meanwhile, fall to 0-6 on the year.
Gardner-Webb outscored Carver 62-8 in the paint, 22-0 on second-chance points and 19-1 on fast breaks while turning 20 forced turnovers into 36 points.
Junior
John Roghelia's layup with 36 seconds remaining capped off Gardner-Webb's first 100-point performance since reaching the century mark in an overtime loss to Presbyterian on Feb. 9, 2019.
Roghelia, who scored his first-career buckets with four points on 2-of-2 shooting, was one of 10 Runnin' Bulldogs to enter the scoring column on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Kareem Reid was dominant down low, successfully connecting on all eight of his shots near the rim to help set a new career high with 20 points – 17 of which came in the first half alone. He also led GWU with nine rebounds (four offensive) and three blocks, both season highs.
Sophomores
Jordan Sears and
D'Maurian Williams each tallied 13 points, marking a season high for Sears, who went 4-of-6 overall and 2-of-4 from 3-point range. As for Williams, he connected on a pair of triples to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Junior
Lance Terry registered double-digits for the fourth time in four games with 12 points, sophomore
Anthony Selden tacked on 11 points and three blocks, and
Ademide Badmus put up 10 points and seven rebounds as the freshman flirted with his first-career double-double.
As for fellow freshman
Leon Williams, the Cambridge, Massachusetts native shined in the second half and wrapped up his outing with nine points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field with eight rebounds, one steal and one block in just under 16 minutes of action.
The 62-point win was the largest margin of victory for Gardner-Webb since it defeated Brevard by 77, 106-29, inside Paul Porter Arena on Dec. 19, 2018. The Runnin' Bulldogs also had a 68-point win that same season – a 105-37 final versus Bob Jones – before going on to win the Big South Conference championship and advance to its first-ever NCAA Tournament.
Behind two-straight 3-pointers from D. Williams to open the game, Gardner-Webb stormed out to a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes. GWU methodically stretched its lead from there, ultimately holding Carver scoreless for nearly 10 minutes prior to halftime while widening the gap to 38 points, 54-16.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to execute in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 46-22 over the final 20 minutes of action. GWU hit at an identical rate of 58.1% from the field on 18-of-31 shooting in both halves.
With its first tally now up in the win column, Gardner-Webb will nopw look ahead to its next outing on Wednesday night, Nov. 24 when the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome Columbia International to Paul Porter Arena for a 7 p.m. tip.
