GREENVILLE, N.C. – Coming off an impressive 83-58 win over North Carolina Central, Gardner-Webb will hit the road for the first time in 19 days as the Runnin' Bulldogs are set to take on East Carolina inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday, December 4 at 3 p.m.
Gardner-Webb, who enters Saturday riding a four-game winning streak, can pull even in the all-time series with ECU with a win. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 2-3 in five head-to-head meetings with the Pirates since moving to the Division I ranks, including a slim two-point loss, 62-60, in the most recent matchup between the two teams back on December 18, 2012 in Greenville. Tim Craft was an assistant coach for ECU at the time, helping guide the Pirates to their best season in school history capped off by a CIT Championship later that year.
After falling in the first three games of the season to UNLV, No. 16 Arkansas and No. 7 Duke, Gardner-Webb returned home and rattled off four wins in a row to jump above .500 for the first time this year. The surging 'Dogs have combined to shoot 55.6% from the floor during its four-game winning streak, posting big wins of 62, 12, 28 and 25 points.
On the East Carolina side, the Pirates held tight defensively in the final seconds Tuesday night for a 63-62 victory over Old Dominion that put ECU at 5-0 in Greenville in 2021-22. Currently in the midst of a winning streak of its own, ECU will go for its sixth-straight victory when it welcomes the Runnin' Bulldogs to its home floor.
BULLDOG BITES
LAST TIME OUT: Gardner-Webb set team season-highs in assists (22), blocks (10) and fouls (23) as the Runnin' Bulldogs led by as many as 41 points in a rout of North Carolina Central, 83-58.
D'Maurian Williams followed up a 25-point performance with another 16 points to lead a GWU team that shot 54.4% (31-of-57) and 45.8% from 3-point range (11-of-24).
STREAKING 'DOGS: Gardner-Webb has combined to outscore opponents 360-233 during its current 4-game win streak. u FULL 360: The last time GWU scored more than 360 points in a 4-game span came during November of 2018-19 when the 'Dogs totaled 385 points in wins over Savannah St. (97-60), Bob Jones (105-37), Johnson & Wales (102-55) and Kennesaw State (81-77 OT).
LAST TIME, GOOD TIME: The last time Gardner-Webb won 5-straight games came back in 2018-19 during its run to a Big South Championship crown. The Runnin' Bulldogs took down Radford, 76-65, in the title game for win number 5 in a row before moving on to face top-seeded Virginia in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament (L, 71-56).
MASTER OF EFFICIENCY: Kareem Reid, who has now finished perfect from the field in 4 different games this season, enters Saturday tied for 3rd amongst all NCAA Division I players shooting 76.8% from the field (43-of-56). He remains GWU's second-leading scorer at 14.0 PPG trailing only
D'Maurian Williams (16.0 PPG). Reid, who entered the season with a single-game career-high of 13 points, has already eclipsed that total in 3 games this season (16 vs. No. 16 Arkansas, 14 vs. No. 7 Duke, 20 vs. Carver). He now has finished in double figures in 6-straight games after opening with a slow night at UNLV.
MASTER OF EFFICIENCY (CONT.): Kareem Reid has now made 28 of his last 30 shots entering Saturday's contest and hasn't missed a single shot in 3 of the past 4 games. Last week, Reid capped off a streak of 20 consecutive made buckets without a miss, a streak that stretched across a total of 104 minutes, 5 halves and 4 games over 12 days from the second half vs. No. 7 Duke on Nov. 16 to the second half vs. Western Carolina on Nov. 27.
BIG SOUTH INDIVIDUAL LEADERS: Entering this weekend, three different GWU players lead the Big South in individual statistical categories:
Kareem Reid – FG% (76.8%),
D'Maurian Williams – Defensive Rebounds per Game (5.6), and
Zion Williams – Offensive Rebounds per Game (2.9).
FINDING THE OPEN MAN: With a season-high 22 assists last time out against North Carolina Central, GWU now sports a 73:50 assist to turnover ratio during its current win streak. In fact, Gardner-Webb has been elite in dishing it to open shooters -- the Runnin' Bulldogs join Saint Mary's as the nation's leaders averaging more than 13 uncontested catch and shoot opportunities per contest.
BOARD CRASHING: Over the last 4 games, Gardner-Webb has nabbed 13, 13, 11 and 11 offensive rebounds, respectively. The last time GWU registered double-digit offensive boards in 4-straight games was during a stretch from Dec. 19 to Jan. 8 in the 2018-19 season.
Zion Williams leads the 'Dogs on the offensive glass averaging 2.9 per game, the 82nd best mark in the nation.
BLOCK PARTY: Kareem Reid ranks 3rd in the Big South at 2.29 blocks per game (#37 in NCAA Division I). He has registered at least 1 block in all 6 games this season and at least 2 blocks all but twice. As a team, GWU ranks 37th in the nation in blocked shots per game at 5.1.
BUCKETS ON BUCKETS: Gardner-Webb has hit 55.6% of shots over its last 4 games and now ranks 25th in the nation shooting it at a 49.2% clip from the field this season.
WELCOME BACK, LUDO: Since returning from an injury to his calf that forced him to miss the first 5 games, senior
Ludovic Dufeal has made an immediate impact for Gardner-Webb, helping spur wins of 28 and 25 in his first two outings. Dufeal has combined to go +38 in just under 35 minutes of action in his two appearances so far this season.
ECLIPSING 20: After setting a new career-high with 21 points in the opener at UNLV,
D'Maurian Williams erupted for 27 points and 9 rebounds a 12-point win vs. Columbia International, and followed that up with 25 points with 6 triples vs Western Carolina. Williams has eclipsed 20 points in 3-of-7 games in 2021-2022.
