CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team fell to UNC Charlotte on Friday evening after a hard-fought battle at Halton Arena. The Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the 49ers with a final score of 79-57.
UNC Charlotte went on a 16-2 scoring run over the last four minutes of play and scored six of the last seven field-goals to top the 'Dogs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 37.3% (22-for-59) from field-goal range, only 23.1% (3-for-13) from beyond the arc, and 76.9% (10-for-13) from the free-throw line. GWU managed to score 26 points in the paint and 14 total points off of turnovers.
The 49ers shot 49.2% (32-for-65) while in field-goal range, 22.2% (2-for-9) from three-point range, and 81.3% (13-for-16) from the free-throw line. Charlotte scored 44 points in the paint and 19 points off of turnovers.
UNC Charlotte had four players put up double-figures, with Octavia Jett-Wilson leading the 49ers with 22 total points.
Gardner-Webb also had four players score double-figures in tonight's battle, with a pair having a double-double night.
Jhessyka Williams and
Alasia Smith grabbed 10 rebounds each, while Williams put up 15 points (5-for-17 FG, 0-for-1 3FG, and 5-for-6 FT) and Smith logged 13 points (5-for-10 FG, 3-for-5 FT) before fouling out of the game. Tonight's game was Williams second double-double of the season and fourth of her career, for Smith it was her first double-double of the season and fourth in her career.
Runnin' Bulldog Starters
Lauren Bevis and
Emma Capps scored 11 points apiece. Bevis made four buckets in field goal range (4-for-11), one three-pointer (1-for-6), and was 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Capps had herself a night, starting for the second game in a row this season she sank five field goals (5-for-12) and a three-pointer (1-for-3), all while gathering three rebounds under the net.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return home to Paul Porter arena this Sunday, December 5th, as they take on Appalachian State at 2 pm. The action will stream on ESPN+ as well as the airwaves of the Runnin' Bulldogs Sports Network.
