FARMVILLE, Va. – DeShaun Wade's half court heave with 4.7 seconds left gave Longwood the lead for good, as Gardner-Webb's last-second try from three fell short in an 57-54 loss to the Lancers on the road.
Longwood (7-14, 6-9 Big South) went on a 6-0 run over the final 36 seconds Thursday afternoon to pick up the win. Gardner-Webb (8-13, 7-9 Big South) led by double figures in both halves and by a 33-24 edge at intermission – using a 14-3 run itself midway through the first half to pull away.
Longwood used the long ball to eventually catch up, keyed by Wade's 7-of-11 effort from deep. He finished with a game-high 24 points for the Lancers, who overcame a 30.4 percent shooting effort to win the game.
Gardner-Webb shot 38.5 percent from the floor (20-of-52), but struggled from three-point land (4-of-22) and lost despite holding a commanding 34-9 lead on the backboards.
D'Maurian Williams scored 11 of his team-best 13 points in the first half and
Jaheam Cornwall scored eight to lead Gardner-Webb. Cornwall made back-to-back baskets late to give Gardner-Webb a 54-51 lead – before Longwood's final charge.
Leading scorer
Lance Terry returned after missing 14 games, and scored five points off the bench in 12 minutes of action.
In addition to Wade's 24 points, Longwood got 15 markers from Justin Hill on 4-of-5 shooting from deep. The Lancers made 13-of-29 shots from that distance (44.8 percent).
The two teams will get back to it tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm. The game will stream live on ESPN+.
