Gardner-Webb Drops 9-0 Decision at Wofford Sunday Afternoon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An eight-run fourth inning for Wofford doomed the Runnin' Bulldogs, as the Terriers would take Sunday's opening weekend series finale by a 9-0 score at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Gardner-Webb (1-2) fell behind early, as Wofford (2-1) scored once in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Lawson Hill.

Neither team pushed a run across until the bottom of the fourth when the Terriers seized control of the contest.  Wofford scored eight runs in the frame on three base hits, while GWU pitchers walked five batters and the 'Dogs committed two errors in the field.

Gardner-Webb managed just three base hits on the day, paced by Mitch McLendon, who was 1-for-2 on the day with a double and also reached once on a walk.  Joe Brazil (1-for-3) and Bo Rusher (1-for-3) collected the remaining base knocks for the Diamond 'Dogs.

Wofford had eight base hits on the afternoon, with Hill (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), Nolen Hester (2-for-2, RBI), and Brennen Dorighi (2-for-4, 2B) pacing that effort.

Casey Young (0-1) took the loss for GWU in his first collegiate start, allowing three earned runs on five base hits with one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.  Five arms made appearances from the bullpen, led by Bobby Alcock, who hurled three scoreless innings, allowing no hit with five strikeouts and one walk.

Elliot Carney (1-0) earned the win, tossing five scoreless frames, giving up three base hits while fanning six batters.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, February 26, opening a four-game weekend series at Georgia.  Friday's game is slated for a 5:00 pm first pitch in Athens, Ga. with live coverage on SEC Network + (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
