Women’s Soccer Wins Home Opener Over Charleston Southern

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer took home the win over Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern on Sunday evening by a final score of 4-1 at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

The first goal of the evening came at the twelve-minute mark by Jada Newton off of a double assist from Maddie Turlington and Anna Fish.

Over the next 30 minutes the Buccaneers and the Runnin' Bulldogs were locked in a back-and-forth battle on the pitch, until Maddie Turlington hit it between the posts off an assist from Jaasiel Forde, furthering the lead for GWU to 2-0.

Shortly after, Newton netted her second goal of the evening off of another assist from Turlington. Just two minutes later, Charleston Southern notched a goal for themselves to close the gap to 3-1.

Jordan Crawford further sealed the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs by scoring off an assist by Newton, which came in the 81st minute of match play.

In goal, Katelyn Kellogg collected the win and had a grand total of six saves in the matchup.

"Charleston Southern made it very difficult for us to play and find any rhythm at all," said head coach Mike Varga. "We were fortunate to be able to capitalize on our chances, Jada and Maddie played well tonight. We know we can play to a higher standard and we will work hard this week to prepare for another tough match next weekend."

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Sunday, February 28th as they hit the road to take on Longwood. The Big South Conference matchup will take place at 2:00 PM.
