Softball Takes Loss to N.C. State In Five Inning Season Opener

Raleigh, N.C. – On Friday afternoon Gardner-Webb Softball (0-1) was defeated by N.C. State (5-2) with a final score of 4-1. The game only lasted five innings, as it was suspended early due to unsafe weather conditions.

On the mound, Brooke Perry took her first loss of the Season for the 'Dogs. In Perry's five inning ballgame she had seven hits and four runs against her.

There was little action until the third inning, where the Wolfpack managed to score their first two runs of the night to take the lead, and shortly got another run in the fourth inning. Putting GWU down by three.

Gardner-Webb tried to close the gap in the fifth inning, as Weslyn Almond scored off of a hit by Trinity Sterrett. To make the score 1-3, Gardner-Webb.

It wasn't enough for the Runnin' Bulldogs to make a comeback, as the Wolfpack put another run on the board in the fifth to make it 4-1, N.C. State before the game was called due to unsafe weather conditions.

"It was nice getting out on the field again and playing a game," Said Head Coach Tom Cole. "We played well, Brooke Perry pitched a nice game, and we got the first game jitters out of the way. We were disappointed that the rain shortened the game, but we got to play, and that's a big deal."

Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow against N.C. State with the double header slated to start at 1:00 PM.
