BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up their second win of the weekend after defeating College of Charleston 5-2. The win marked the third overall for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while the loss marked the first of the season for College of Charleston.
"The key to today was our performance in doubles as well as us keeping the momentum going into singles matches as we won four of the six," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "I have a lot of respect for Charleston's players and their coach, Jay, for their performance today."
Chrisjan Van Wyk and
Victor Putter started the day by winning the #1 doubles matchup.
Sebastian Harris and
Connor Enslin lost the #3 doubles match 5-7 to College of Charleston's Robby Krick and Ben Husum. Gardner-Webb clinched the doubles point with
Breno Plentz and
Stefano Puga's victory at the #2 flight.
In singles action, Plentz won the #3 match 6-4, 6-1. Putter put up a dominating 6-2, 6-3 performance in the #1 position to further the 'Dogs overall lead.
Chrisjan Wan Wyk triumphed in the #2 flight, winning 7-6(4), 6-3 to clinch Gardner-Webb's victory.
The next match to conclude was the #6 position where College of Charleston's Krick defeated
John Spring in a back-and-forth 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 match. Enslin's match at the #4 flight ended with him winning 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-1. The day ended with Harris losing in the #5 position 6-2, 6-7(4), 2-6.
"I'm glad the boys are finding their rhythm and confidence heading into the rest of the season," said Griffith. "We are looking forward to going on the road one more time leading into conference matches in one week."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Kennesaw, GA next weekend for matches against Kennesaw State and Tennessee Tech on the 5th and 6th. During the week, they will open their conference slate on Monday, March 8th, at home against Campbell and Thursday, March 11th, playing Longwood
