KENNESAW, GA. – Kennesaw State defeated Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon to put the team a 3-6 on the season.
"We didn't get the win today, but overall we got better and this will help us against Campbell," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith. "Kennesaw State got the win by simply playing the big points a little bit better."
Kennesaw State secured the doubles point by winning the #2 and #3 matches. The #2 finished first with a 6-4 score where
Breno Plentz and
Stefano Puga losing.
Sebastian Harris and
John Spring were defeated 6-4 as well. The #1 doubles position that included the Runnin' Bulldogs'
Chrisjan Van Wyk and
Victor Putter was left unfinished with the score at 5-5.
The Owls got out to an early lead in many singles matches also leading to three matches being left unfinished. Spring lost in the #5 match 6-2, 6-3. In the #6 flight,
Cathal Butler fell 6-4, 6-2. KSU clinched the match with Sergio Ingles' victory over Van Wyk 6-4, 7-5.
The unfinished matches came from the #1, 3, and 4 positions. Putter played in the #1 match and was entering the third set with the scores at 0-6, 7-6(5) when it ended. In the #3 flight, Plentz lost the first set 2-6. He won the second set 7-6(1) in a tiebreaker at the end of the match. Harris fell in the first set 6-7(2) and was leading the second set 1-0 when the match was over.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will open conference play next week and face off against three different conference foes. On Monday, they play at home verses Campbell and host Longwood on Thursday. The team will then go on the road to play at Presbyterian to conclude the week's action.
