Cornwall Leads Gardner-Webb To 91-64 Win Over Presbyterian On Senior Night

BOILING SPRINGS – Jaheam Cornwall scored 19 points on Senior Night and Gardner-Webb shot 59.3 percent to sprint to an impressive 91-64 win over Presbyterian Friday in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-11, 7-7 Big South) shot over 70 percent for much of the second half, cooling to a crispy 65.4 percent for the stanza. That soft shooting touch allowed Gardner-Webb to blow the game wide open, making 8-of-10 from three-point range in the second half to turn a comfortable lead into a blowout.

In addition to Cornwall's 19 points, the 'Dogs got 19 points from freshman D'Maurian Williams, 16 points from freshman Jordan Sears and 11 points (nine rebounds) from freshman Jamaine Mann. Kareem Reid and Jacob Falko each scored nine and freshman Anthony Selden netted eight points off the bench.

Gardner-Webb's freshman class scored a combined 54 points on the night.

The Runnin' Bulldogs built a comfortable 43-32 lead by halftime, paced by Sears 11 early points.

The Blue Hose (5-11, 3-10 Big South) stayed within range early in the second half, trailing just 52-44 with 15:31 to play after an old-fashioned trifecta from forward Winston Hill.

Gardner-Webb heated up, getting five in a row from Mann and multiple buckets from Williams to power a 15-3 run to get its margin to 20 points for the second night in a row with under 10 minutes to play.

Presbyterian clipped the score back to 17 points briefly, but Gardner-Webb countered with a 13-0 run over the next 3:41 to go up 83-53 on a follow shot from Mann at the 4:29 mark.

Williams splashed two more three-pointers in the next 90 seconds and GWU led by as many as 33 points down the stretch.

Gardner-Webb finished the game at an efficient 59.3 percent from the deck, including a 13-of-23 effort from long range (56.5 percent). Add in a 14-of-17 night at the free throw line (82.4 percent) and only six turnovers against one of the league's most effective turnover creating teams – and Friday night was one of the best overall performances for GWU this season.

Presbyterian shot better than 50 percent for much of the second half, but cooled at the same time Gardner-Webb was heating up further. The Blue Hose finished the night at 44.0 percent and made 8-of-21 from long range (38.1 percent).

Gardner-Webb held a 27-7 bench scoring edge, outscored the Blue Hose by 10 in the paint and scored 13 points off of Presbyterian's 10 turnovers.

The 'Dogs will have a quick turnaround, traveling 40 minutes down I-85 on Monday to take on USC Upstate. Opening tip is set for 5:00 pm and will stream live on ESPN3. The game is also available regionally on CW62.
